Art Deco Silver Quaich, William Bruford, 1937
Here we have a stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Quaich. The octagonal bowl is panelled and the horizontal handles are pierced in an entwined curving design. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind making this perfect for any whisky lover to enjoy their tipple from.
The quaich was made in London for William Bruford & Son and dates to 1937. Founded in the early 1900s, William Bruford & Son were retail jewellers, silversmiths and watchmakers with stores in Eastbourne and Exeter. They commissioned jewellery and silverware to their designs, which were assayed in London, Birmingham and Sheffield. They remained in business into the 1960s.
Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The quaich measures 12.8cm / 5ins from handle to handle, 7.8cm / 3ins across the bowl and stands 1.8cm / 0.71ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 60g / 2.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on one panel of the body, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter B for 1937 and the W B & S Ltd sponsors' mark for William Bruford & Sons Ltd.
