Art Nouveau Silver Butterfly Dish, Chester, 1912

Here we have a beautiful Art Nouveau Pierced Sterling Silver Bonbon Dish. The dish is triangular with rounded ends and a circular base. Each of the three pierced panels has a butterfly cut into the piercing with engraved detail on the body and wings.
Probably originally intended to hold wrapped sweets, this versatile dish works equally well with nuts, snacks, potpourri or simply as a decorative item in its own right.
The butterfly dish is made by silversmiths Sydney & Co of Birmingham and assayed in Chester in 1912. Founded by brothers Judah, Albert and Lionel Ahronsberg in the late 19th century, Sidney & Co specialised in silverware for personal and decorative use of consistently high quality. They remained in business until the mid 1970s.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced work and only the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 110 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dish is 9.5cm / 3.7ins from top to bottom, 9.4cm / 3.7ins across and stands 3.9cm / 1.5ins high. It weighs a very respectable 47.2g / 1.66oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the dish, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword & three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter M for 1912 and the S & Co makers' mark for Sydney & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the dish.
