Art Nouveau Silver Button, London Import, 1903
This is an attractive Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Button from the Edwardian era. The circular button has a typically Nouveau design of a female fairy set amongst flowers.
The button was imported into Britain by Robert Friederich and assayed in London in 1903. It is probably French in origin. Robert Friederich was originally from Pforzheim in Germany but moved to the UK around 1902. He set up a business in London importing Continental silver items for sale in Britain but was only active for a short while, perhaps until 1910.
Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The button is 1.5cm in diameter and weighs in at 1.8g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the front of the button, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the F stamp for Foreign, showing that it is an import, the date letter h for 1903 and the R F importers' mark for Robert Friederich.
