A fully hallmarked antique of great charm made in the late 1800s. This solid silver case is made from sterling silver. Both the lid & base are hallmarked with the boar's head and the lid has the maker's mark. I have included an image of the maker's mark but it is too worn to read (image five). Nineteenth century French silversmiths are famous for the exquisite allegories, fables & illustrations adorning their pieces. This is typical of the genre & the work is of a very high standard. The piece is so finely wrought that no scratches or fingerprints can be seen on the case. The whole exterior case takes on the theme of Art Nouveau Spectacular Naturalism. The molded edges give the feel that you are handling something natural & on the whole exterior case - every millimeter is adorned with superb skill. The background silver is textured, repousse roses, daisy form flowers, leaves & foliage form a perfectly balanced composition with elaborate scroll work. The molded edges continue onto the front of the case & there we see an elaborate scroll which forms a seat for the flute player to sit. Below him & above garlands of flowers. As you would expect of such a highly wrought French antique the seated musician's garments, facial expression, hair & even his fingers show great attention to detail. This is an exquisitely beautiful nineteenth century objet d'art. The base is no less ornate with repousse floral motifs & scroll work. The interior case is the vermeil & so enchanting it is to see the work in reverse. All clasps & hinges work perfectly. The case is in superb condition.
The antique silver case measures 3 2/3" X 2 1/2" & weighs 104.2 grams.
