Art Nouveau Silver Nut Dish, H. Matthews, 1895
Here we have an exquisite late Victorian Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Nut Dish. The dish has a deep bowl with flat handles extending from either side. The base is plain but the sides and handles are completely covered with embossed flowing Art Nouveau flowers and foliage with the upper parts of the bowl and the handles also being pierced.
Although originally intended for nuts or snacks, the bowl would work equally well on a dressing table or bedside cabinet for antique jewellery or on a desk for small items of stationery.
The nut dish is made in Birmingham by silversmith Henry Matthews and dates to 1895. Matthews registered his Birmingham mark in June 1893. He is best known for his beautifully decorated personal items but also made a wide range of tableware and other domestic silverware. He remained in business into the early 1930s.
Condition is extremely good, with just one truly tiny ding in the base, no damage to the delicate pierced areas and only the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The nut dish measures 12.7cm / 5ins from handle to handle, 7.5cm / 2.9ins across the top of the bowl and stands 3.3cm / 1.3ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 43.7g / 1.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter v for 1895 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
