Art Nouveau Silver Pen Tray, Wm. Hutton & Ss, 1896

Here we have a striking Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Pen Tray. The tray is a long rectangle with rounded corners. It has an embossed Art Nouveau decoration on the base and a crimped rim. The central cartouche has a faint inscription on it which has been much polished over the years and is now very hard to read. It is one persons name from another persons name and a date in 1897 but more than that we can't say.
The pen tray was made in London by renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons Ltd and dates to 1896. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm got into trouble in the late 1920s, as so many did, and was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect in a pen tray that has graced a desk for over 125 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pen tray is 19cm / 7.5ins long, 6cm / 2.3ins wide and stands 0.9cm / 0.35ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 75.3g / 2.66oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside edge of the tray are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's herad assay mark for London, the date letter a for 1896 and the distinctive W H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the pentray.
