Art Nouveau Silver Pierced Dish, Birmingham, 1894
Here we have an exquisite Victorian Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Pierced Dish or Bowl. The dish is oval shaped with intricate embossed Art Nouveau swooping flowers and foliage making for a truly beautiful design. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
This is a versatile dish that would look very stylish on a dressing table, be ideal for holding nuts, snacks or sweets, make an elegant addition to a desk or simply be an attractive item in its own right.
The dish is made in Birmingham and dates to 1894. The makers' mark is very rubbed but a ghost of it is still there. It is hard to be certain but we think it is most likely that of Hilliard & Thomason who were active in Birmingham at this time and are well known for their fine Art Nouveau silver.
Condition is extremely good with no damage to the delicate pierced sides and only the bare minimum of superficial surface wear. It seems likely that this has mostly been kept as an ornamental piece and seen very little use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dish is 16.6cm / 6.5ins long, 8cm / 3.1ins across and stands 2cm / 0.8ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 53.2g / 1.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.
Although the makers' mark is nearly rubbed away, the other hallmarks are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham and the Gothic date letter u for 1894.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
