Art Nouveau Silver Sugar Tongs, Jos. Williams 1907

This is an elegant pair of Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs. The tongs have flowing scroll decoration on the upper part of the arms surmounted by a bead framed cartouche with a fan above. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The sugar tongs are made by Josiah Williams & Co of Bristol and assayed in London in 1907. With a history dating back to around 1818, Josiah Williams & Co were the largest firm of British silversmiths outside of London, Birmingham & Sheffield. As Bristol didn't have an assay office their items were sent first to Exeter and, after that office closed, to London for hallmarking. They ceased trading at the start of the Second World War.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 115 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sugar tongs are 8.8cm / 3.5ins long and weigh in at a very respectable 21.1g / 0.74oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of the hinge are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter m for 1907 and the GJ over DF makers' mark for George Jackson and David Fullerton of Josiah Williams & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
