Art Nouveau Silver Trinket Dish, Gorham, 1904
This is a very pretty Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Trinket Dish. The dish is of quatrefoil shape with four lobed sides elegantly decorated with embossed swirls and flowers. It is a good size for holding items of antique jewellery and would look very striking on any dressing table or bedside cabinet.
The trinket dish has been imported into the UK by famous US silversmiths Gorham and assayed in Birmingham in 1904. Gorham had a London showroom and a small silver factory in Birmingham in the early years of the 20th century and this was almost certainly made by Gorham in the US and then imported for sale in their London showroom.
Condition is very good with just a few very tiny dings in the base and the superficial surface wear that is inevitable in a trinket dish having metal items put in and taken out on a regular basis. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dish is 13.2cm / 5.2ins wide, 9.3cm / 3.7ins deep and 2.2cm / 0.9ins high. It weighs a respectable 43.4g / 1.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, at one end of the interior of the dish, are crisp and clear to read. They show the .925 stamp for imported Sterling Silver, the Greek letter delta import assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter e for 1904 and the G.M.Co importers mark for Gorham Manufacturing Co.
