Art Nouveau Silver Vase, S.J. Levi & Co, 1910
This is a very elegant Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Vase. The vase is an Art Nouveau take on trumpet shape with a long body tapering upwards from a circular base to a round cup with a wavy rim supported by three whiplash handles. The base is weighted for stability and covered with thin black leather to avoid scratching whatever surface it is sat on.
The vase is made in Birmingham by silversmiths S.J. Levi & Co and dates to 1910, the last year of the Edwardian era. The firm was founded in 1901 and operated from the Squirrel Works in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. They made a range of good quality domestic silverware and remained in business up until the late 1930s.
Condition is very good with one shallow crease in the cup and a slight dent in one handle in the bar joining it to the top rim of the cup plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vase stands 24.2cm / 9.5ins high and is 12cm / 4.7ins across at its widest point. It weighs in at 242.1g / 8.5oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the base.
The hallmarks, on the upper side of the base, are somewhat rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay maker for Birmingham, the date letter l for 1910 and the S J L & Co makers' mark for S.J. Levi & Co.
