Arts & Crafts Silver Card Case, Chester, 1909

This is a handsome Arts & Crafts Sterling Silver Card Case from the Edwardian era. The oblong case has a planished or hammered finish across the whole body, typical of the Arts & Crafts style, and a blank circular cartouche in the centre. The body is curved to fit comfortably into a pocket. The lid is hinged and the interior is gilded.
The card case was made by William Neale & Son and assayed in Chester in 1909. The firm was founded by William Neale in Birmingham in 1862 and registered marks in both Birmingham and Chester. They became William Neale & Son in 1890. The company produced a very wide range of silverware from trophies to tea services and cigarette boxes to pencils and were highly successful. They remained in business into the mid 1960s.
Condition is good, with just a small shallow bruise to the back right hand corner and the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after 115 years of good service. The hinge is in good working order and the lid closes securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The card case is 8cm / 3.1ins wide by 4.2cm / 1.6ins high and weighs in at a respectable 37.1g / 1.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim at the front, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter I for 1909 and the W.N makers' mark for William Neale & Son. There is a second partial set on the outside of the lid.
Shipping in the UK is £12.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the case.
