Arts & Crafts Silver Mustard Pot, C. Westwood 1907

This is a stylish Arts & Crafts Sterling Silver Mustard Pot from the Edwardian era with its original Blue Glass Liner. The mustard pot is octagonal with nail type struts running up four panels from bun feet and the other four panels pierced with two diagonal spots, rather like a domino. There is a looping handle and an urn style finial. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The mustard pot was made in Birmingham by Charles Westwood & Sons and dates to 1907. Charles Westwood established his firm in Hall Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter in the 1890s in partnership with his sons. They primarily produced silver for the table and had marks registered in both Birmingham and Chester. The company remained in business until the start of the First World War.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, just a slight gap between the lid and the body plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 115 years of use. There are no chips or cracks in the glass liner. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot is 6.3cm / 2.5ins from rim to handle, 4.5cm / 1.8ins across the body and 4.5cm / 1.8ins high. Without the glass liner it weighs in at a very respectable 46.4g / 1.64oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 84.6g / 2.98oz.
The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body, are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter h for 1907 and the C.W & S makers' mark for Charles Westwood & Sons.
