Arts & Crafts Silver Quaich, Reid & Sons, 1909

Here we have a handsome Arts & Crafts Sterling Silver Quaich or Porringer from the Edwardian era. The quaich has the two distinctive flat handles coming out horizontally from the rim, which in this case have the addition of finger rings beneath. The bowl of the quaich is planished or hammered, a decorative technique typical of the Arts & Crafts style. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The quaich was made by Reid & Sons of Newcastle and assayed in Sheffield in 1909, the Newcastle assay office having closed in 1884. The firm was founded by Christian Ker Reid in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1778 and were both retailers and manufacturing silversmiths and jewellers. They sold both their own items and other pieces that they commissioned. The business passed through numerous generations of the Reid family until it was finally bought by Northern Goldsmiths in 1967. The store in Newcastle still trades as Reid & Sons.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 115 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The quaich measures 15.7cm / 6.2ins from handle to handle, 10.6cm / 4.2ins across the bowl and stands 4.4cm / 1.7ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 137.5g / 4.85oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter r for 1909 and the R & S makers' mark for Reid & Sons of Newcastle.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the quaich.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
