Arts & Crafts Silver Trinket Dish, Birmingham 1915

This is a lovely Sterling Silver Trinket Dish from the latter part of the Arts & Crafts period. The dish is made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths A & J Zimmerman and dates to 1915. Brothers Arthur & John Zimmerman were in business in Regent Place, Birmingham from around 1889 until 1929. They made a wide range of personal and household items of consistently high quality and in a variety of styles.
This trinket dish or ring dish features a distinctive planished or hammered base, one of the signature styles of the Arts & Crafts movement, with a smooth central button and rim. It makes for an elegant combination that would look very smart on any modern or period dressing table today.
The dish is in excellent condition with no dings or dents and is a very well made piece in a good heavy gauge of silver that feels nice and weighty in the hand. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dish measures 8.8cm / 3.4" in diameter and sits 1cm / 0.4" high. It weighs a substantial 55.3g / 1.95oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the edge of the base of the dish are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "q" for 1915 and the very distinctive A&J Z makers' mark for A & J Zimmerman.
