Chester Silver Pepper Shaker, Nathan & Hayes, 1915

This is an absolutely top quality George V Sterling Silver Pepper Shaker in the shape of an urn. The pepper shaker is made by Nathan & Hayes and assayed in Birmingham in 1915. George Nathan & Ridley Hayes founded their company in Birmingham in the mid-1890s and quickly established a reputation for good quality silver pieces. The partnership ceased trading in the middle of WWI in 1916, so this is a very late piece by them.
Like many Birmingham and other silversmiths, Nathan & Hayes regularly used the less busy Chester assay office to have their smaller pieces tested and marked. The Chester office closed in 1962, which makes Chester hallmarked pieces more sought after.
As you would expect from Nathan & Hayes, this is a very well made piece in a heavy gauge of silver. It is urn shaped with a stepped base and a ball finial. It is totally usable on a dining table today or would make a fine addition to a collection.
Condition is very good with just the superficial surface wear you would expect after over 100 years of service. The lid fits securely and the inside is very clean with no corrosion marks. There is one place where the top rim is a little flattened. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pepper shaker stands 9.2cm / 3.5" high, it is 4.4cm / 1.75" in diameter across the base and weighs a substantial 74.7g / 2.63oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the side of the shaker and the rim of the lid are clear to read with the exception of the makers' mark, which is somewhat rubbed but still easy to decipher. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword & 3 wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter "P" for 1915 and the GN over RH makers' mark for George Nathan & Ridley Hayes.
