Unique Continental Silver "Memento Mori" Snuff Box, 19th C
The snuff box is of rectangular form, with engine-turned decoration to the base.
The hinged cover is engraved with foliage design and is decorated to the centre with a medical emblem comprising a goblet with two snakes winding around its stem (Caduceus rod), and two human skulls to both sides.
Edge of the lid is stamped "800" indicating possibly late 19thC Austrian silver. There seems to be another (maker's?) mark which is too small and worn thus impossible to identify.
The snuff box is in a very good condition with light surface wear. The lid opens smoothly and closes firmly.
Approx: 78mm x 47mm x 17mm
Very heavy - 60.23g.
