Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with Silver Lid, 1913
This is a charming George V Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver Lid. The glass pot has hobnail cut decoration around the body and a star cut base. The silver lid has a raised central section with a scalloped edge, engine turned lines and a blank cartouche. The underside of the lid is gilded.
The dressing table pot is made in Birmingham by silversmith Henry Matthews and dates to 1913. Henry Matthews founded his firm in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter in 1893. He made a wide range of domestic and personal silverware but is perhaps best known for his perfume bottles, dressing table sets, brushes and hand mirrors. The firm ceased trading around 1930.
Condition is extremely good, with no chips or cracks in the glass and just a couple of truly miniscule dings in the silver lid plus the superficial wear that has to be expected after around 110 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jar is 3.2cm / 1.2ins high and 3.8cm / 1.5ins in diameter. The lid by itself weighs 10.2g / 0.36oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the dressing table pot weighs 46.3g / 1.6oz.
The hallmarks, on the rim of the lid, are nice and easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter o for 1913 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
