Dutch Silver Night Watch Spoon, Amsterdam, 1917

Here we have a fine quality and highly decorated antique Dutch 833 Silver Spoon. The bowl of the spoon features a representation of Rembrandt's great masterpiece The Night Watch, the stem is twisted and pierced and the finial is a windmill with a revolving set of sails.
The spoon is made by Jac. van Straten of Hoorn and assayed in Amsterdam in 1917. Van Straten was active between 1901 and 1938.
Condition is very good with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after just over 100 years. The windmill is in full working order! The spoon has almost certainly always been kept as a treasured souvenir and never used. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 18.8cm / 7.4ins long and weighs a substantial 48.4g / 1.7oz of solid silver.
The Netherlands has an excellent and long established system of hallmarking for silver. As is usually the case the marks are scattered around the design of the spoon. In the bowl is the lion passant facing right with a number 2 below it which shows that it is 833 / 1000 grade silver. This has a key stamped at the tail end, which shows that the piece was intended for export. Also in the bowl is the v.s mark for Jac. van Straten. Partway up the stem is the letter H, the date letter for 1917, and on the body of the windmill is the head of Minerva with a letter A stamped on the helmet, which shows that it was assayed in Amsterdam.
