Dutch Silver Tea Strainer, A.J. Hooijkaas, 1945/6 Dutch Silver Netherlands %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a good quality Dutch 833 Silver Tea Strainer from immediately after the Second World War. The pierced bowl is set in a diamond shaped rim with scroll decoration whilst the stem has a portrait between two dolphins topped by a windmill with an articulated sail.

The tea strainer was made in Schoonhoven, Netherlands by A.J. Hooijkaas and dates to 1945/6. In the chaotic circumstances at the end of World War Two, the Dutch used the same date letter of a crowned letter k for both years before resuming annual letters in 1947. The Hooijkaas firm was founded in 1874 by Hubertus Hooijkaas in the Dutch city of Schoonhoven, sometimes called the silver city of the Netherlands as silverware was such an important part of the city’s economy. By the 1930s, H. Hooijkaas was Schoonhoven’s principal employer and the most important silver factory in the city. They produced both silverware and silver plate of consistently high quality and remained in business until around 2008.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The tea strainer is 12.9cm / 5.1ins long and 7.9cm / 3.1ins wide. It weighs in at a respectable 25.3g / 0.89oz of solid silver.

The hallmarks are somewhat rubbed but still clear to read. At the front of the rim are the lion passant above the number 2 for 833/1000 grade silver, the Minerva's head assay mark with the letter M on the helmet for Schoonhoven and the crowned letter k for 1945/46. On the left hand side of the rim is the A H 3 makers' mark for A.J. Hooijkaas. The tower of the windmill has the lion passant and no.2 and the sails are stamped with the dagger mark, both for 833 grade silver.
