Early 20th C. Bowl in Louis XV Style, Chester 1911

Here we have an elegant Early 20th Century Sterling Silver Pierced Two Handled Bowl in the 18th century Louis XV style. The bowl has an oval base standing on four ornate feet. The pierced body is decorated with swags and has a portrait of King Louis XV on one side and Queen Marie on the other.
The bowl was made in Hanau, Germany by Gerbruder Glaser (Glaser Brothers), imported into Britain by George Bedingham and assayed in Chester in 1911.
Founded in 1883, Gerbruder Glaser produced a wide range of ornamental silver in predominantly 18th century styles, typical of the output of the city of Hanau during the German Empire period. In 1914 they merged with another Hanau silversmith Wolf & Knell to form Vereinigte Silberwarenfabrik (United Silverware Factory).
George Bedingham operated from premises in Paternoster Row, near St Paul’s Cathedral in London. He specialised in importing fine silver from Continental Europe, particularly Germany, and was in business from 1899 until the start of the First World War.
Condition is very good, with just an old repair near one handle, which has securely fixed a small split in the rim plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl measures 17.9cm / 7ins from handle to handle, 11.3cm / 4.4ins across the body and stands 8.4cm / 3.3ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 249.2g / 8.79oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The underside of the base is marked with the Hanau marks for Gerbruder Glaser and the English hallmarks showing the .925 stamp for imported Sterling Silver, the oak leaves import assay mark for Chester, the date letter L for 1911 and the G.B sponsors' mark for the importer George Bedingham.
Shipping in the UK is £12.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the bowl.
