Here we have a very stylish Early 20th Century German 900 Silver and Enamel Mesh Evening Bag or Purse. The mesh bag is long and slender with a fringe at the bottom decorated with three rosettes. The top frame is a horseshoe shaped arch with royal blue enamel on the front and plain silver on the back. The clasp is decorated with two dark blue stones and there is a bar chain wrist strap.

The evening bag was made in Germany by the firm of Wessel & Müller, who were particularly known for this type of work, and dates to around 1900 to 1920. Wessel & Müller was a company based in the town of Luckenwalde in Brandenburg, Germany that was in business in the late 19th and early 20th century. They specialised in making silver frames and clasps for bags and purses.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents in the frame, no damage to either the enamel or the mesh of the bag and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The mesh bag is 17.5cm / 6.9ins from the clasp to the bottom of the fringe, 8cm / 3.1ins across and 30cm / 11.8ins from the top of the strap to the bottom of the bag. It weighs in at a very respectable 73.2g / 2.58oz.

The frame is marked on the side with the crescent & crown stamp for German solid silver, the 900 stamp to show that it is 900/1000 grade silver, a high grade for Germany, and the XX in a box stamp for Wessel & Müller. There is a fourth mark, which is probably for the retailer, but we have been unable to decipher this.
