This is a good quality Early Victorian Sterling Silver Butter Knife in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The blade is scimitar shaped, curved to curl the butter and has a thread decorated top rim. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The butter knife was made by silversmith Henry M. Norris and assayed in Exeter in 1843. Henry Norris was a Plymouth based silversmith who specialised in spoons and flatware. He was active between 1835 and 1844 and his pieces were assayed in Exeter, the assay office for South West England.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 180 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The butter knife is 19.7cm / 7.75ins long, 3cm / 1.2ins across the blade and weighs in at a very respectable 63.0g / 2.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the Gothic date letter G for 1843, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the H M N makers' mark for Henry M. Norris.
