Edwardian Large Silver Snuff Box, Chester, 1909

This is a good quality Edwardian Large Sterling Silver Snuff Box with a hinged lid. The box is oblong with a moulded harebell rim around the lid and the base. The top of the lid is engraved with a Tudor Rose design surrounded by flower and ribbon swags. The inside of the box is gilded.
The snuff box is made by noted silversmiths Nathan & Hayes and assayed in Chester in 1909. Founded in Birmingham in 1894 by George Nathan and Ridley Hayes, the firm quickly established a reputation for good quality silverware, particularly tableware and items for personal use. They opened a showroom in London's prestigious Hatton Garden district and their items are seen with Birmingham, Chester & London hallmarks. They ceased trading during the First World War, around about 1916/7.
Condition is very good with just a small shallow ding in the lid and a tiny one at the back of the body, plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 114 years of use, much of it probably spent in someone's pocket. There is some inevitable wear to the gilding of the interior. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The snuff box measures 6.3cm / 2.5ins by 4.2cm / 1.6ins and stands 3cm / 1.2ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 56.9g / 2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the front of the box, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword & three wheatsheeves assay mark for Chester, the script date letter I for 1909 and the G.N over R.H makers' mark for George Nathan & Ridley Hayes.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the snuff box.
