Edwardian Silver Bonbon Dish, Sydney & Co, 1903

Here we have a charming Edwardian Sterling Silver Bonbon Dish. The dish has an oval base, deep sides pierced with a star and circle pattern and an embossed rim with scrolls and flowers on a textured background. A cheeky face peers out of a flower at each end of the dish. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
Bonbon dishes were originally intended for wrapped sweets but they are versatile pieces that can also be used for snacks, as trinket dish on a dressing table, for small items of stationery on a desk, for potpourri or just as a decorative item in its own right.
The dish was made in Birmingham by Sydney & Co and dates to 1903. Sydney & Co was founded by Judah, Albert & Lionel Ahronsberg in around 1900 at premises in Powell Street in Birmingham. They produced an extensive range of small silverware for personal and domestic use and also made a range of trophy cups. The firm was very successful and remained in business until around the mid 1970s.
Condition is very good, with no damage to the pierced bodywork, just one truly tiny ding in the base of the dish and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bonbon dish is 14.5cm / 5.7ins long, 10.6cm / 4.2ins wide and stands 4.5cm / 1.8ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 75.2g / 2.65oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, to either side of the central panel on one side, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter d for 1903 and the S & Co makers' mark for Sydney & Co.
