Edwardian Silver Bud Vase, Henry Matthews, 1902
This is a charming Edwardian Sterling Silver Bud Vase. The vase has a circular stepped base, weighted for stability, a tapered stem and a quatrefoil top rim. It is ideal for a single flower and would look lovely on a small table or a breakfast tray.
The bud vase was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmith Henry Matthews and dates to 1902. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware and remained in business up until around 1930.
Condition is very good, with just one truly tiny ding in the stem and the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vase stands 8.6cm / 3.4ins high and is 3.4cm / 1.3ins across the top rim. It weighs in at 31.6g / 1.1oz, which does of course include the weighting material in the base.
The hallmarks, just below the top rim, are a little rubbed but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter c for 1902 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
