Edwardian Silver Cello Snuff Box, Chester, 1902

Here we have a fabulous German 930 Silver Novelty Snuff Box in the form of a Cello, imported during the Edwardian era. The hinged lid and base of the cello are decorated with rustic male and female figures and the sides of the body are embossed with scrolling foliage. The interior of the box is gilded.
The snuff box was made in Hanau, Germany by B. Neresheimer & Sohne, imported into Britain by M. Friedlander & Co and assayed in Chester in 1902. B. Neresheimer & Sohne were founded in 1893 and, like most Hanau silversmiths, specialised in historical reproductions. M. Friedlander & Co was founded by Montague Friedlander in Glasgow in the late 1880s. The firm specialised in smoking accessories which they either manufactured or imported. Despite being based in Glasgow, virtually all their items were assayed in Chester. They remained in business until about 1920.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents however the strings of the cello have become a little twisted over time. It is over 120 years old! The hinge works well and the lid shuts securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The snuff box is 9.3cm / 3.6ins long, 3.3cm / 1.3ins across and 2.2cm / 0.87ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 54.0g / 1.9oz of solid 930 grade silver.
The underside of the neck of the cello is stamped 930 for 930/1000 grade silver and has the crowned grapes mark of B. Neresheimer & Sohne. The underside of the body has the lion passant for Sterling Silver (925/1000 grade) or higher, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter B for 1902, the F stamp for Foreign and the M F importers' mark for M. Friedlander & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £12.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the snuff box.
