Edwardian Silver Cream Jug, Jones & Crompton, 1905
Here we have an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Cream Jug. The jug is basically oval in shape with a tapered body descending to four bun feet. There is fluted decoration at each of the four corners and a beaded upper rim. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cream jug is made in Birmingham by Jones & Crompton and dates to 1905. Edward Samuel Jones founded the business around 1895 with Hubert Crompton joining as his partner in 1899. Operating from Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter, they remained active until the mid-1930s.
Condition is very good with just a couple of small dings to the bun feet and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after this length of time. It remains perfectly usable as a cream jug today. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug is 14cm / 5.5ins from lip to handle, 6.8cm / 2.7ins across the top rim and stands 8.8cm / 3.5ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 140.9g / 4.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, just below the rim, are clear to read with just the date letter being somewhat rubbed. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter f for 1905 and the J & C makers' mark for Jones & Crompton.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cream jug.
