Edwardian Silver Jewellery Box, Alex. Clark, 1909

Here we have a charming Edwardian Sterling Silver Jewellery Box with its original blue velvet and silk interior and gilding to the inside of the lid. The box is oval in shape with a pretty floral design on the lid and stands on four feet.
The antique jewellery box is made in Birmingham by the Alexander Clark Manufacturing Co and dates to 1909. Founded by the wonderfully named Clift Alexander Mawer Clark in 1891, the firm had both retail and manufacturing premises in London, later opening manufacturing plants in both Sheffield and Birmingham. They specialised in high end personal items for ladies and gentlemen.
Condition is good with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. The hinge is in good working order, the lid closes securely and it stands level on its four feet. The velvet & silk lining is also in good condition, although the underside, not visible in normal use, is rather scuffed. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jewellery box is a good size to sit on a dressing table or bedside cabinet for rings, earrings, pendants or other small items of antique jewellery. It is 6cm / 2.4ins across, 4.5cm / 1.8ins deep and stands 3.3cm / 1.3ins high. It weighs in at 38.7g / 1.4oz but a small amount of this is the lining material.
The hallmarks on the rim of the base are clear to read apart from the makers' mark, which is quite rubbed but can be deciphered with a magnifier. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter k for 1909 and the A C M Co in a shield makers' mark for the Alexander Clark Manufacturing Co.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the jewellery box.
