Edwardian Silver Mounted Glass Inkwell, 1904

Here we have a fine quality Edwardian Silver Mounted Cut Glass Inkwell. The inkwell is made from a clear glass cube with chamfered edges and a hobnail cut base with the well set into the centre. The top has a plain silver collar and flat lid. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
This would look very striking on any desk today for someone who enjoys using a fountain pen or doing calligraphy.
The inkwell was made in London by the renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons Ltd and dates to 1904. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm got into trouble in the late 1920s, as so many did, and was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.
Overall condition is very good apart from a small chip in the glass at the bottom front right hand corner and the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after nearly 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The inkwell is 6.7cm / 2.6ins square and stands 5.7cm / 2.2ins high. It weighs 506g / 17.8oz.
The hallmarks, on the silver rim, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter II for 1904 and the distinctive W H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £13.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the inkwell.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
