Edwardian Silver Napkin Ring, Atkin Bros, 1902

Here we have a fine quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Napkin Ring in its original case. The napkin ring has buckle style decoration at the front and intricate pierced work around the rest of the body. The top and bottom rims are rolled. Above and below the buckle the ring is elegantly engraved with the initials N.L.S. and the date 1904. It seems likely that this was originally a Christening gift.
The napkin ring is a top quality piece in a good gauge of silver. It is made by Atkin Brothers in Sheffield and dates to 1902, a couple of years before the engraving was added. Atkin Brothers were a very well regarded firm of silversmiths and electroplaters who could trace their origins back to the mid-18th century. The firm became Atkin Brothers around 1853 and remained in business for over a century until 1958. The box is marked for the retailer Wm. Bruford & Son of Eastbourne & Exeter.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and no damage to the pierced sections. There is just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after nearly 120 years of service. The box has a few small scuff marks but the hinge and the catch are both in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The napkin ring is 4.8cm / 1.8ins in diameter and 3.4cm / 1.3ins high. It weighs a substantial 40.8g / 1.4oz of solid Sterling Silver. The box is 8.2cm / 3.25ins square and 6.8cm / 2.6ins high.
The hallmarks just next to the buckle section are well struck, crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter k for 1902 and the HA makers\' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers.
