Edwardian Silver Ring Box, Broadway & Co, 1903

This is an attractive Edwardian Sterling Silver Ring Box with a cushioned lid and flat base. The pierced silver holder has a serpentine front and is decorated with scrolls and flowers. The lid is covered in velvet, the interior is lined in turquoise satin and the ring tray is in pale green velvet with slots for five rings.
The ring box was made in Birmingham by Broadway & Co and dates to 1903. Broadway & Co was founded by William Benjamin Broadway in Birmingham in 1901. The firm quickly established a reputation for good quality workmanship and produced a wide range of silverware for personal and domestic use. The company, now called Broadway Silversmiths, remains under the control of the Broadway family to this day and still uses many of the original dies and tools from the early years of the company.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents in the silver, no damage to the pierced work and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of use. There is inevitably some wear to the velvet on the lid but the interior is in good condition and the hinge is in working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The ring box is 10.4cm / 4ins wide, 5.5cm / 2.1ins deep and stands 4.6cm / 1.8ins high. It weighs in at 73.4g / 2.59oz.
The hallmarks, on the front of the body, are clear to read but the makers' mark has been pierced by one of the screws attaching the holder to the box. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter d for 1903 and the pierced B & Co makers' mark for Broadway & Co.
