Edwardian Silver Shell Dish, Atkin Brothers, 1902

This is a smart and practical Edwardian Sterling Silver Shell Dish with its original frosted glass liner. Shaped as a scallop shell it stands on four ball feet and has a moulded handle. This would originally have been intended as a butter dish but is a versatile item that could be used for many different items on the dining table, to hold nuts or snacks or for potpourri.
The shell dish was made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths Atkin Brothers and dates to 1902. Atkin Brothers descended from the firm of Thomas Law founded around 1750 and continued by his descendants. Henry Atkin became a partner in 1824 and the firm continued in the Atkin family until 1940, with the name continuing in use until the early 1960s.
Condition is very good with just a slight crease in the base of the silver where a foot has pushed up a little and a tiny nibble in the rim of the glass liner. It remains perfectly usable today. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The shell dish measures 12.1cm / 4.7ins from handle to rim, 10.3cm / 4ins across the top rim and stands 3.5cm / 1.4ins high. Without the glass liner, the shell weighs 65.4g / 2.3oz of solid Sterling Silver and all in the dish weighs 199.6g / 7oz.
The hallmarks, on the upper side of the handle, are somewhat rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter k for 1902 and the H A makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the dish.
