Edwardian Silver Sovereign Case, Birmingham, 1909

This is a good quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Sovereign Case. The plain case is oblong with rounded corners and has one coin holder for full sovereigns and one for half sovereigns. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The sovereign case was made in Birmingham for retailer Collingwood & Son and dates to 1909. Collingwood & Son was a retail jeweller, watchmaker and silversmith based in Middlesbrough. Founded by Matthew Collingwood in 1855 they opened branches in several other towns in the North East of England and remained in business until the early 1960s.
Condition is good, with just a few tiny dings on the outside, such as you would expect from an item that has probably spent most of its life in a pocket or handbag. The coin holders are in full working order and the lid snaps shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sovereign case is 5cm / 1.9ins wide, 4.5cm / 1.7ins from ring to hinge and 1.2cm / 0.47ins deep. It weighs in at 29.1g / 1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the lid, are nice and clear to read apart from the sponsors' mark, which is a little rubbed but still identifiable. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham the date letter k for 1909 and the C & S Ltd sponsors' mark for Collingwood & Son Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the sovereign case.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
