Edwardian Silver String Dispenser, London, 1902

Here we have an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver String Dispenser. The dispenser is cylindrical with an intricate pierced body and solid base and lid. The finial is pierced with a hole in order to feed the string through from the holder beneath. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
This would look very smart on a desk today, on a craft bench or anywhere that string is regularly in use.
The string dispenser was made in London by acclaimed silversmiths William Hutton & Sons Ltd and dates to 1902. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm got into trouble in the late 1920s, as so many did, and was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of truly tiny dings in the lid plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dispenser is 7.8cm / 3.1ins high and 5.7cm / 2.2ins in diameter. It weighs in at a substantial 88.4g / 3.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
There are full sets of hallmarks on both the pierced body and the inside of the lid. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter g for 1902 and the distinctive W H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd. In addition, the body is stamped with the registered design number 312662, which dates the original design to 1898.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the string dispenser.
