Edwardian Silver Tea Caddy, Lee & Wigfull, 1909

Here we have an elegant and unusual Edwardian Sterling Silver Tea Caddy. The octagonal caddy stands on four spreading feet and has a hinged domed circular lid with a conical finial. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The tea caddy was made in Sheffield by silversmiths Lee & Wigfull and dates to 1909. Founded in Sheffield in 1871 by George Lee and Harry Wigfull, the firm were electroplaters, silversmiths and pewterers. George Lee left the firm in 1879 but the company continued to trade as Lee & Wigfull. The firm prospered and remained in the Wigfull family until the end of the Second World War. A number of buyers then followed before the firm ceased trading around 1969.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after 115 years of good service. The hinge on the lid is in good working order and the lid snaps shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tea caddy is 7.9cm / 3.1ins across and stands 9cm / 3.5ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 149.5g / 5.27oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter r for 1909 and the H W makers' mark for Harry Wigfull of Lee & Wigfull.
Shipping in the UK is £11.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the tea caddy.
