Edwardian Small Silver Chamberstick, Chester, 1904

Here we have a good quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Small Chamberstick complete with its original Snuffer. The chamberstick has an oblong base with a gadrooned rim. The cylindrical stem holds a removable sconce which also has a gadrooned rim. The finger ring has line decoration and the conical snuffer is attached to it by a chain. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The chamberstick was made by noted silversmiths Nathan & Hayes and assayed in Chester in 1904. George Nathan and Ridley Hayes began their partnership in Birmingham in the late 1880s. They are particularly known for their good quality silver tableware, which they primarily assayed in Birmingham, and more personal items such as buckles, buttons and dressing table jars, which they mostly assayed in Chester. They remained in business up until around 1920.
Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The chamberstick measures 9cm / 3.5ins from front rim to handle, 8.5cm / 3.3ins across the width of the base and stands 3.7cm / 1.4ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 95.3g / 3.36oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper side of the base, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter D for 1904 and the G.N over R.H makers' mark for George Nathan & Ridley Hayes. There are secondary partial sets on the snuffer and the sconce.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the chamberstick.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
