Fine Chinese Boxwood Carving of a Fisherman

This is an exceptional late 19th century Qing Dynasty Chinese stained boxwood carving of a fisherman, his wide brimmed rattan hat hanging from his neck and a basket swinging from his belt, holding a pole with three large fish tied to the top. His left hand holds a fourth fish which he appears to be offering to the large bird at his side while a fifth fish flaps on the ground nibbling the hem of the man's robe.
This carving appears to represent a successful day's fishing using a traditional technique where cormorants are trained to catch fish in rivers. A ring around the bird's neck prevents the cormorant from swallowing any of its catch. The fisherman rewards his faithful companion with a fish while he returns home with the rest of the day's catch.
Dimensions: Height 22 x Width 8 x Depth 7 cm
Weight 309 g
Condition: The carving is in very good antique condition. The man, bird and five fish have glass eyes, all of which are present. Additional photographs are available - please contact David using the enquiry form or phone David on 07931 370372.
Postage & packing: £6 within the UK. We can also deliver to international destinations at reasonable cost - please contact us for a quote.
