Fine Quality 7.3kg Jean Gout Bronze Salvator Rosa

A Superb Quality Antique French Cast Bronze Sculpture
Dating to the second half of the 19th century.
The piece depicts the Italian Baroque painter, Salvator Rosa (1615 - 1673).
The figure seated upon a naturalistic rocky outcrop, holding a folio and scribe, with further leaning panels or tablets at the base. He is shown wearing a hat, cape, ruffled / pleated long sleeves and knee-length leather boots.
This is a brilliantly rendered portrait of an important artist of the Baroque era. The quality of the modelling and the detail are a joy.
This particular example benefits from outstanding colour and patination, the bronze of a deep chocolate hue with absolutely no signs of any ill advised cleaning or polishing whatsoever, with some areas slightly more buffed only from occasional handling over very many decades......all in all exactly the kind of surface you want to find on an antique bronze from this period.
The piece is incomplete - the hat would have once been surmounted by a feather or quill, and to the right of the sitter's folded knee, there would have once been a sword. These absences do not at all immediately detract and it is only really on comparing with other models that you realise these pieces are no longer present. There is also a small indentation to the rim of the hat - possibly from where the feather / plume would have located.
The colour and surface patina on this piece are the best I've seen on a Jean-Gout sculpture and make this is a highly decorative and desirable piece. Signed and titled to the base, as shown, the quality is underpinned by the outright weight, which comes in at an impressive 7.3 kg.
Dimensions -
33.5 cms tall.
Weight, as noted, c.7.3 kg.
Condition -
Good. The figure is missing a few pieces, as noted in the main description above, but the bronze is in excellent condition for age with superb colour - and an old patina, with no harsh or ill advised cleaning or rubbing.
