French Mid Victorian 3 piece bayonet fireiron set
French mid Victorian 3 piece bayonet fireiron set
This is a quality set of 3 steel fire irons - poker, shovel and tongs, each made from 19th Century French Military Bayonets.
These sword bayonets were manufactured to fit the French model 1874 "Gras" Infantry Rifles and were made between about 1874 and 1885.
The blades are engraved on the back edge with the arsenal, month and year of manufacture. The 4 blades used here all bear engravings for the years 1876 to 1879.
The pommels are brass, the grips are walnut and the crossguards are steel as are the blades. They each retain their latching mechanisms and muzzle rings.
They have been converted to fireirons and work excellently. The steel is patinated and waxed.
Approximately 64cm long.
