French Silver Mesh Coin Purse, London Import, 1920

Here we have a fine quality early 20th century French Sterling Silver Mesh Coin Purse from the 1920s. The purse has a solid silver frame with a snap clasp, a silver mesh body for holding a few coins and a chain and finger ring handle.
These mesh purses and evening bags were very popular with society ladies in the Edwardian era and throughout the 1920s. The best ones were considered to be made in France, as this one was, and commanded a high price when imported into England.
This coin purse was made in Paris, France by the company Baudet and imported into England by Gourdel, Valès & Co of London in 1920. Baudet were highly regard Parisian silversmiths who were in business between 1882 and 1935. Gourdel, Valès & Co also began in Paris, founded by Constant Valès in 1827, before later opening in London in the 1850s and specialising in imported French and Austrian luxury items. They ceased trading in 1939.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no breaks in the mesh and just a little misshaping to the finger ring and the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The clasp snaps open and closed securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The coin purse is 6.2cm / 2.4ins by 4.9cm / 1.9ins and from the finger ring to the bottom of the purse is 11.5cm / 4.5ins. It weighs in at 16.1g / 0.57oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the frame are well struck and clear to read. On one side they show the 925 stamp for Sterling Silver, the Leo astrological sign for London assayed imports, the date letter e for 1920 and the G.V & Co importers' mark for Gourdel, Valès & Co. The other side has the 925 stamp for Sterling Silver, the Leo astrological sign for London and the French makers' mark for Baudet featuring their trademark donkey above the word BAUDET and 925 for Sterling Silver.
