George II Silver Berry Table Spoon, London, 1754
Here we have a good quality George II Sterling Silver Table Spoon with later Berry Decoration. In the mid 19th century it became very fashionable for the Victorians to enhance plain Georgian spoons with embossed berry decoration in the bowls and this is a good example. The spoon also has a chased design on both the front and back of the stem and the initials SCEB elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.
The table spoon was made in London in 1754. The makers' mark E:O is probably that of Elizabeth Oldfield although this is not absolutely certain. Elizabeth Jackson registered her mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in 1748. She was almost certainly the widow of Charles Jackson and inherited his business as a specialist spoon maker. After remarrying she registered a new mark in 1751 as Elizabeth Oldfield but both her EJ and EO marks continue to be seen into the late 1750s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents. The bowl was lightly gilded at the time of the berry decoration in the 19th century but much of the gilding has now rubbed off. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The table spoon is 21.2cm / 8.3ins long and weighs in at a very respectable 74.4g / 2.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
As is usually the case with mid 18th century spoons, the hallmarks are somewhat distorted where the stem has been rehammered after marking, however they remain clearly identifiable. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter t for 1754 and the E:O makers' mark, which is probably that of Elizabeth Oldfield.
