George II Silver Table Spoon, William Soame, 1728

Here we have a fine quality George II Sterling Silver Table Spoon in the Hanoverian with Rat Tail pattern. The spoon has the distinctive Hanoverian features of an upturned end to the stem, a strong rib down the front and a rat tail along the back of the bowl. The initials J W are elegantly engraved on the underside of the stem.
The table spoon was made in London by renowned silversmith William Soame and dates to 1728. William Soame registered his first mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in 1723. He was an exceptional specialist flatware maker and one of his spoons is of fine enough quality to be part of the National Silver Collection in the V & A Museum in London. He remained active until at least the mid 1840s.
Condition is very good, with just one truly tiny ding in the bowl, a little wear to the tip and the overall superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after nearly 300 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 19.8cm / 7.8ins long and weighs in at a very respectable 62.6g / 2.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The spoon is bottom struck, as you would expect at this time, so there is inevitably some distortion to the hallmarks but they are still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter N for 1728 and the W S makers' mark for William Soame.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoon.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
