George III Bright Cut Silver Sugar Tongs, c.1810s
![](http://staticaz.antiquesatlas.com/images/loading_new.gif)
Here we have a very elegant pair of George III Bright Cut Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs with beautiful engraving down each arm. There is a zigzag pattern engraved along the edges of both arms and around the hinge of the tongs. Down each arm and on to the back of the bowl there is a twisted stem & leaf design. The initials JH are nicely engraved in the cartouche on the hinge.
The tongs were made in London by James Beebe and date to between 1811 and 1820. James Beebe was a very good specialist spoon and flatware maker who registered his mark in 1811 and remained in business until the mid-1840s. The tongs have the George III duty mark on them, which was only in use until his death in 1820, so we can be confident that the tongs date to between 1811 and 1820.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and only the minimal wear that you would expect after 200 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tongs are 14cm / 5.5ins long and weigh a substantial 33.9g / 1.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The marks are quite well rubbed but what can still be deciphered are the lion passant for Sterling Silver and the George III duty mark on one arm and the JB makers' mark for James Beebe on the other arm.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
