George III Irish Silver Sifter Ladle, c.1760s / 70s

This is a well made George III Irish Sterling Silver Pierced or Sifter Ladle in Celtic Pointed pattern, an Irish variant on the Old English pattern. The stem has a shall and scroll engraving around a blank cartouche. The pierced bowl is shell shaped and, for an extra Irish touch, the top piercing in each row is shaped as a shamrock.
The ladle was made in Dublin by silversmith Michael Keating and dates to around the 1760s or 1770s. Michael Keating was a specialist spoon and flatware maker in Dublin who was active between around 1760 and 1800, although most of his known pieces are from the 1760s and 1770s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 240 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The ladle is 17.7cm / 7ins long and 5.5cm / 2.2ins across the bowl. It weighs in at a very respectable 42.1g / 1.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The ladle is bottom marked, meaning the hallmarks are just above where the stem joins the bowl. As is frequently the case with bottom marked spoons, the hallmarks have been distorted when the silversmith has hammered the stem back into shape after marking. The three marks can however still be identified as the crowned harp for Irish Sterling Silver, the Hibernia mark which at this date was a duty mark but would later become the assay mark for Dublin and the M K makers' mark for Michael Keating. There is no date letter, which is not uncommon on 18th century Irish flatware.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the sifter ladle.
