George III Silver Basting Spoon, Newcastle, 1810
Here we have a fine quality George III Sterling Silver Basting Spoon in the classic Old English pattern. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
Basting spoons were the largest size of spoon in normal production with the long stem enabling a joint of meat to be basted without getting too close to the heat. Today they are mostly used as large serving spoons.
The basting spoon was made in Newcastle-upon-Tyne by silversmith George Murray and dates to 1810. George Murray was active in Newcastle-upon-Tyne between 1805 and 1816, working from premises in The Side. This was the most successful period of silver and gold production in Newcastle, which peaked around 1815. George Murray was principally a spoon and flatware maker but his mark is occasionally seen on other small items of silver such as decanter labels and salts.
Condition is very good, with just a shallow creases in the bowl of the spoon and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 210 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The basting spoon is 30.5cm / 12ins in length and weighs in at a substantial 113.6g / 4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towers and crowned leopard's head assay marks for Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the date letter U for 1810, the George III duty mark and the G M in an oval makers' mark for George Murray.
