George III Silver Cream Jug, London, 1808

Here we have an excellent quality George III Sterling Silver Cream Jug with a gilt interior. The cream jug is oval with a part scalloped body, a ribbed handle and a flat base. The body is decorated with bands of engraving at top and bottom and a central laurel wreath cartouche on each side, which is blank.
The cream jug is made in London in 1808. In terms of maker it's difficult to be certain as the mark is quite rubbed but by a process of elimination it must be one of William Bennett, William Hunter or William Stroud, who were all active in the city at this period.
Condition is very good with just a couple of tiny dings on the front panel of the jug and the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 210 years of service on the table. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug is 12.6cm / 5ins from lip to handle, 6.9cm / 2.7ins across and stands 9.4cm / 3.7ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 118.6g / 4.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the front panel of the body beneath the lip, are a somewhat rubbed but mostly clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter N, the George III duty mark and the partially erased W ? makers' mark, which is for one of William Bennett, William Hunter or William Stroud.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cream jug.
