George III Silver Cream Jug, William Collings 1777

Here we have a very attractive George III Sterling Silver Cream Jug. The jug is of bulbous form and stands on three hoof feet. The body has all round repousse decoration of flowers and foliage with a central cartouche bearing the initials JE, although these are quite rubbed. The jug has a scroll handle with an acanthus top and beaded decoration around the rim.
The jug is made in London by William Collings and dates to 1777. Not much information is available about William Collings but he seems to have been active in the 1770s and possibly also the 1780s, making small items of tableware. Going by this cream jug he was clearly an accomplished silversmith.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 245 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug is 10cm / 3.9ins from lip to handle, 4.2cm / 1.6ins across and stands 9.5cm / 3.7ins high. It weighs a very respectable 86.9g / 3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the side of the jug are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter b for 1777 and the W.C makers' mark for William Collings.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the jug.
