George III Silver Gravy Boat, J.M, London, 1768

Here we have a typically elegant Early George III Sterling Silver Gravy Boat. The boat is in the classic Georgian style with a bulbous body standing on three pad feet, line decoration around the rim and a leaf decorated scroll handle.
The gravy boat is made in London and dates to 1768. The maker could be either Jacob Marsh or John Moore, who used almost identical makers' marks and were both active in London at this time producing a similar range of silverware. This is a good quality piece so whichever one was the maker was clearly an accomplished silversmith.
Condition is very good with just one very slight wave to the rim of the lip on the left hand side plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 255 years of service on the dining table. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The gravy boat measures 18cm / 7.1ins from lip to handle, 8.3cm / 3.2ins across the body and stands 9.4cm / 3.7ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 248g / 8.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are a little rubbed after many years of polishing but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the Old English date letter N for 1768 and the I.M makers' mark for either Jacob Marsh or John Moore.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the gravy boat.
