George III Silver Mustard Pot, Newcastle, 1795
Here we have a fine George III Sterling Silver Mustard Pot with its Blue Glass liner from the North-East of England. The mustard pot is oval in shape with a flat base and engraved decoration all around the body. There is a blank cartouche on each side and the lid has a ball finial. The sweeping handle has line decoration down its length.
The mustard pot is made in Newcastle-upon-Tyne by silversmiths John Robertson and David Darling and dates to 1795. John Robertson began his career in partnership with an already established silversmith John Langlands between 1778 and 1795. He then formed a brief partnership with David Darling for just 15 months during 1795/6 before continuing by himself until his death in 1801. He was succeeded by his wife Ann and later his son John Robertson (II). Due to the short partnership between Robertson and Darling their joint mark is comparatively rare.
Condition is very good with just a couple of truly tiny dings in the silver plus the superficial wear that has to be expected in an item that has served on the table for over 225 years. The glass liner has no chips or cracks and fits snugly into the pot. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot is of a good size measuring 10cm / 3.9ins from rim to handle, 5.3cm / 2.1ins across and 6.7cm / 2.6ins high. Without the blue glass liner it weighs a substantial 114.2g / 4oz of solid Sterling Silver and all in it weighs 207.7g / 7.3oz.
The hallmarks on the underside of the base are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towers assay mark for Newcastle in conjunction with the London crowned leopard's head, as was the normal practice in both Newcastle and York, the date letter E for 1795, the George III duty mark and the I R over D D makers' mark for John Robertson and David Darling.
