George III Silver Mustard Spoon, W Bateman, 1819

This is a good quality George III Sterling Silver Mustard Spoon in the classic Old English pattern. The spoon has the initials B H M neatly engraved at the top of the stem.
The mustard spoon was made in London by William Bateman Snr and dates to 1819. The Bateman Family dominated silver production in London during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly in flatware. The business was driven by Hester Bateman who after being widowed in 1760 turned her husband’s insignificant silver firm into a hugely successful company. She was succeeded by her sons Peter and Jonathan in 1790 but Jonathan died soon after and his widow Ann took over his partnership with Peter. They were later joined by Ann’s son William who eventually took over the firm and was finally followed by his son William Jr.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 200 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard spoon is 11.5cm / 4.5ins long and weighs in at 8.3g / 0.29oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter d for 1819. the George III duty mark and the W.B makers' mark for William Bateman.
